if they need to eat someplace else, the birds will do so after preening. i watched them head off to a spot about 50 yards away. this spot was usually an area of intertidal mudflats along the shore. i watched as they walked up to the mudflats and jumped into the water. after preening for a little while, they walked back to the colony where they joined the others.
during the period when i was watching, one bird was seen chasing another one to the water. the other bird eventually landed at the mudflats where the other bird also joined it. then, they both returned to the colony.
