Protein microarrays are becoming an important tool in bioanalysis due to their low cost, multiplexing capacity, and good throughput. In this report, we present the first application of a protein microarray to identify proteins that interact with host cell proteins during infection. This is important for the characterization of viral proteins in a system that closely resembles infection, and for the development of new drugs against viruses. Several eukaryotic and prokaryotic viruses were used to identify host cell proteins that interact with viral proteins. In general, the interaction profiles were more complex for eukaryotic viruses and for herpesviruses. Different biological roles of the viral proteins were identified, including transcriptional activation, RNA polymerase II regulation, cellular transformation, capsid assembly, and virion release. Several host cell proteins were identified as coregulators of viral functions, including proteins with roles in chromatin structure and cellular proliferation. These results indicate that protein microarrays are a promising technology for the analysis of viral proteins and virus-host protein interactions in vivo.Idol (2003 film)

Effect of single-dose intravenous folate on the one-carbon metabolic system in blood and leukocytes in healthy adults.
The effect of a single dose of 200 micrograms of folate as of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate on the one-carbon metabolic system was studied in blood and leukocytes in healthy adults. Both folate metabolites, folic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, were determined in plasma and leukocytes at baseline and 2, 8, 16, and 48 hr after folate administration. In leukocytes, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate was significantly increased at 2 and 16 hr after the folate dose and returned to baseline by 48 hr. In plasma, folic acid was significantly increased at 2 hr and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate was significantly increased at 8 hr. The ratio of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to folic acid in both leukocytes and plasma was significantly increased at 2, 8, and 16 hr. In leukocytes, folic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate correlated positively. In plasma, folic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate correlated positively. In conclusion, a single dose of folate administered intravenously increased the concentration of folate metabolites in plasma and leukocytes and the ratio of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to folic acid in leukocytes.
